The incident is alleged to have taken place when police raided the People Unite Movement musicians co-operative after which Baker was left with a fractured skull and in a coma. The magistrate dismissed the case for lack of identification evidence.

After a suggestion published in “Sounds” dated January 19th (which hit the streets yesterday), the magistrate was inundated with telegrams from fans and campaigners expressing their views on the matter.

R&B singer Billy Stewart (“Sitting In The Park”) and three of his band, The Soul Kings, die when the car they’re travelling in hits a bridge support and tumbles into the Neuse River in North Carolina. The car was a one-week old Ford Thunderbird that Stewart had planned to have serviced at their next stop, Columbia, South Carolina where they were booked for a gig.

The wheels were seen to wobble by the band’s manager who was travelling in a second car behind the others. It’s believed they locked up pulling the car into a bridge support. Stewart’s family later sued the Ford Motor Company, who settled before the case reached court.

Babble

Well, there goes the New Year resolution already. I went to bed this morning convinced I’d uploaded today’s blog. It seems that although I’d hit the “Publish” button, I’d shut down my browser before it uploaded or saved the contents. Anyway, better late than never – as they say!

Those of you who read this on a regular basis will know that I’ve been trying to clear out the Rockmine garage for some time now. This started with me listing stuff on eBay and then I moved things to Rockmine itself. Of late, I’ve been letting a dealer come and cherry-pick albums. Last week, he hit the singles and pulled out piles of interesting and obscure stuff.

I got a text from him today telling me he’s spent all the money he allocated for me, a situation we’ve all been in I suppose. One of the real gems he was going to take was a rare Scottish beat single from 1964 – The Boston Dexters – “You’ve Been Talking About Me” bw/ “Nothing’s Gonna Change Me”. It was released on Contemporary Recording CR 102. The copy is Excellent condition and I’m putting it up for sale later today on Rockmine. Strangely, I found the b-side on YouTube. Here it is:

1965. Adam Faith arrives back in London after abandoning his South African tour which ended in farce on the 8th. He denies reports that the incident was a publicity stunt, claiming that it will cost him £ 30,000 in lost earnings and a further £ 20,000 a year from record sales. He had been told that the issue of racially segregated audiences was policy and not law and said that the secretary to the Minister of the Interior had given him the names of five other British artists who had made it clear they would only perform for mixed audiences. The £ 20,000 bond he surrendered to the Department Of Justice was to cover “breach of contract damages” and he didn’t know if any of it would be returned. Meanwhile the Foreign Secretary, Patrick Gordon Walker, has instructed the British Embassy in Pretoria to provide him with an immediate report on the detention of Faith and his manager.

In The Studio

1956. In the early afternoon, Elvis Presley, Scotty Moore and Bill Black begin their first recording session for RCA Records at the company’s studios at McGavock Street, Nashville. The sessions, arranged by RCA’s Nashville agent, Chet Atkins will end tomorrow. By that time Elvis, Scotty and Bill will have recorded “Heartbreak Hotel” along with four other tracks (“I Got A Woman”, “Money Honey”, “I’m Counting On You” and “I Was The One”). During the sessions, Chet Atkins plays rhythm guitar, Floyd Cramer plays piano and DJ Fontana drums.

The British Airports Authority announces it will review access for fans to ensure this never happens again. The group had been at the airport on October 18th but fans were unaware as there was no publicity. Airport officials have blamed the fanclub for notifying its 60,000 members that the group were arriving back from Copenhagen today.

In Hospital

1977. Garrie Lammin rhythm guitarist with Cock Sparrer has his hand stitched at hospital after being slashed by a broken bottle after tonight’s gig at The Music Machine in London’s Camden High Street. Mr. Lammin, ever the gent, had gone to the aid of a punk maiden being hassled outside the venue by some Teddy Boys.

Talking of Mr. Lammin; his concern over Keith Richards problems in Canada, prompted him to write to NME. The letter, published in the July 23rd edition, reads: “If Keef goes down for life, can ya please ask him if I can have his Dan Armstrong?”.

On Television

Death

2002. R&B singer and piano player, Rosco Gordon dies from a heart attach at his home in Rego Park in the New York burgh of Queens aged 74. Despite having a string of hits (on the R&B charts) in the 1950s and 60s, he made little money from his songs. He quit the music business in the early 60s after he learnt that he’d lost the rights to over 300 songs, including the R&B standard, “Just A Little Bit” which was covered by such diverse artists as Blue Cheer, Rory Gallagher, Etta James, Elvis Presley and Them. He moved to New York and bought into a dry cleaning business after winning a card game. In 1969, he launched his own label, Bab-Roc, from home, financed by profits from the dry cleaning and was eventually lured back to touring in 1981. His most recent album was “Memphis, Tennessee”, released by the Canadian label, Stony Plain in 2000.

Babble

I’m at a bit of a loss today. It’s another festival weekend and I haven’t got a paddling pool deep enough for all the mud I’d need to make the cinema room a truly fulfilling experience. It’s always hard to know what to do in these circumstances. I had considered taking the projector outside and having a festival weekend in the garden but I just can’t get enthusiastic about it.

So, it’s going to be another weekend of recording all the different feeds on the Freeview and terrestrial channels and never getting time to edit them to disc. The big news for this weekend is that I’ve reworked the whole rockmine.tv concept and will have a one-page link to EVERY YouTube clip I’ve included in the blog. It really does make for interesting viewing and a great way of wasting time at home or at  work. Needless to say, I’ll post the news when it’s online.

From the Rockmine Almanac for today (Monday 7th July):

Birth

1940. Ringo Starr born Richard Starkey at 9, Madryn Street, Dingle, Liverpool, England. The house, pictured above, was once sold at a Beatles auction during one of Liverpool’s famous Beatles weekends for £ 15,000. I’m sure at the time I took this photo, which was several years after the sale, it was scheduled for demolition to make way for new affordable housing. Any comments about its current status would be much appreciated.

On The Radio

1954. Sam Phillips gives local Memphis DJ, Dewey Phillips (no relation) an acetate recording of “That’s All Right (Mama)” cut by Elvis Presley at Sun Studios on July 5th. Sam asks Dewey to play it on his “Red, Hot And Blue” show which he does. Within minutes the phone lines are buzzing. Dewey is forced to play the track 14 times and locate its singer (out at a movie at the Suzore Cinema with some friends) for his first ever interview. [Elvis: “Mr. Phillips, I don’t know nothing’ about being interviewed”. Phillips: “Just don’t say nothin’ dirty”].

In Court

2000. Eminem appears in the 44th District Court in Auburn Hills for a preliminary hearing. The rapper faces charges relating to weapons possession which stem from a fight with an Insane Clown Posse employee at a car audio store in Royal Oak, Michigan.

Later in the day in an unconnected incident, emergency services are called to Eminem’s home in Sterling Heights, Michigan, where his wife, Kimberly Mathers, is found to have attempted suicide by slashing her wrists. Kimberley was taken to nearby Mt. Clemens General Hospital for evaluation but released the next day. A press release issued by Sterling Heights Police Department, said that emergency personnel were called to the scene around 11.30 pm. Mathers, who was conscious when they arrived, was treated for her injuries at the scene before being transferred to hospital. Eminem was not at home at the time of the incident.

In Hospital

1967. Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones collapses at the Hilton Hotel in London. He’s taken to the Priory Nursing Home in Roehampton suffering from strain and exhaustion. A spokesman for the group said, “We have been asked to request that the press do not seek to find the whereabouts of Mr. Jones as it may well impede his recovery”. Brian is placed under the care of psychiatrist Dr. Anthony Flood. Dr. Flood will continue to see him on a regular basis even after he leaves the Priory.

On Television

2002. The South Bank Show (ITV, U.K.) 585. Moby. Once again, thanks to the wonders of YouTube, this clip will link to the rest of this show.

Death

1993. Mia Zapata (The Gits) is found raped and strangled to death in Seattle, aged 27. She had left friends in the city’s Comet Tavern at approx 2 a.m. to walk to a friend’s flat a few streets away. Her body was found on the sidewalk little more than an hour later. Police believe she had been killed elsewhere and then dumped from a car.

From the Rockmine Almanac for today (Tuesday 1st July):

Birth

1977. Actress Liv Tyler is born at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Although her birth certificate lists her father as Todd Rundgren she found out in 1988 that her biological father was in fact Steven Tyler. Liv’s mother, Bebe Buell, was Playboy’s Playmate Of The Month for November 1974 and a renowned groupie. She lived with Rundgren from 1972 until 1977 and dated Tyler in 1976 and 1977. If Liv’s choice of two fathers seems confusing, it’s complicated by the fact that both men have married twice since her birth. Her mother’s also managed to fit in two other husbands and a relationship with Elvis Costello that saw her twice mis-carry. That means Liv manages a grand total of one mother, two fathers, two step-fathers and four step-mothers!

On Tour

1997. Figures released today show that despite NOT selling out all their shows, U2‘s “Popmart” is the biggest grossing tour of the year. The cash registers have rung up $ 45 million since the band kicked off on April 25th – that’s $ 2.4 million every night!

In Court

1996. The High Court in London rules that Paula Yates acted unlawfully when she knocked down a partition wall in the house she had shared with ex-husband Bob Geldof. The ruling is being contested by Yates and both parties will be back in court this week. The action follows a bizarre house swap in which Paula and her new lover, Michael Hutchence are occupying the former Geldof family home while Bob has moved into the INXS star’s £ 400,000 warehouse flat.

Later that day… Status Quo are also in The High Court in London in a bid to force BBC Radio 1 to play their records. The judge, Mr. Justice Collins takes less than an hour to dismiss the “hopeless” case. He points out that there is no legal requirement for Radio 1 to like their music.

In Hospital

1969. John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Kyoko Cox and Julian Lennon are all injured in a road accident in the Tongue area of Sutherland, Scotland. They are staying in the area whilst visiting John’s aunt in Durness. All four are taken to hospital in Golspie where John receives 17 stitches to a head wound and Yoko 14. Kyoko needs 4 stitches but Julian escapes with bruising and shock. John was driving an Austin Maxi hired for their trip. It’s thought he panicked on the single-track road as a vehicle approached and over-reacted. The car swerved off the road into a ditch and overturned. The car was later transported to John and Yoko’s home, Tittenhurst Park near Ascot and left in the garden to remind them of the event. It’s pictured on my Lennon autograph page here

On Television

1956. Elvis Presley appears on the Steve Allen Show. He is ordered not to girate or dance or make any “suggestive” movements. In an effort to give him a more serious image, his host dresses him in a tuxedo with tails and has him sing “Hound Dog” to a bassett hound. The fans react badly. The next day there are pickets outside the television studios demanding “the real Elvis”. Elvis, of course, takes it all in his stride and seems to enter into the fun of it when he quips that the only thing that doesn’t match his tux and tails are the blue suede shoes he’s wearing.

Death

1981. Rushton Moreve (Steppenwolf), real name John Russell Morgan, dies in a car crash in Sunny Valley, California, aged 35. Moreve had been a session player in Los Angeles before joining a Canadian group called Sparrow which had moved to the city in 1967. That soon changed its name to Steppenwolf which turned into one of the biggest bands on the scene. Moreve left the band under the most bizzare circumstances. Early in 1969, Steppenwolf were heading for a weekend of gigs in Colorado. Moreve turned up at the airport with enough trunks for a stay of several months and several friends in tow. After their gigs, Moreve and friends refused to fly back to Los Angeles despite having to tape a television show the next day. The band flew home, a replacement drummer was found and Moreve wasn’t seen for weeks. When he eventually returned, he told Steppenwolf front-man John Kay that he and the friends with him had believed that a massive earthquake was scheduled to consign California to the ocean floor and they were staying away. Having figured out that the ‘quake wasn’t going to happen, they made their way home. Unfortunately, John Kay had already replaced him and was in no mood to put up with such paranoia.

Babble

I’ve updated Rockmine’s Archive page which finally gives a comprehensive overview of the depth of the archive’s written word collection. It’s a crazy concept as even in the course of putting the lists online, I’ve found or added more. None of these listings may ever be complete!

Regardless of whether you’re a casual rock fan or a hardened rock journalist, you need to take a look at these lists.

The Music Paper Archive – These are the music papers currently in stock, from the late 1950s to date. Obviously, if you have something that’s not listed here, then let me know. I’m always happy to swap and have thousands of muisc papers from the late 1970s to mid 1990s for trade.

The Library – This covers most of the seminal books on rock and pop and nearly every related genre and style. This would be a big library on its own but as part of a one-stop resource it shows just how HUGE Rockmine is.

The Magazine And Cuttings Collections – Rock music is the soundtrack to our lives and the people who make it shape our thoughts and even our world. The Magazine Colection takes rock and pop away from the analytical view of music journalists and shows how “real” magazines deal with our heroes. It can be a fascinating and sometimes different angle.

As for the cuttings, everything you could ever want is there: the gossip, the interviews, reviews and news coverage as well as changing styles and even partners. An essential part of Rockmine, the events cuttings are the basis to Rockmine’s Almanac – part of which is published here every day.

The Legal Document Archive – It’s amazing what’s hidden in the stuffy pages of legal filings. Autopsy reports, police files, court transcripts, judgements, F.B.I. files, divorce petitions and wills, they’re all here. For the stories behind events and the reality of rock stars’ lives – and deaths, these are a treasure trove of information.

From the Rockmine Almanac for today (Thursday 26th June):

Birth

1893. Bluesman Big Bill Broonzy born William Lee Conley Broonzy in Scott, Mississippi.

On Tour

1977. Elvis Presley plays Market Square Arena in Indianapolis. Unbeknown to Elvis or his fans, it will be his last concert.

… and in 2002. Twenty-five years after the event, a memorial is unveiled on the site of Elvis Presley’s last concert. The 58 inch high granite block with brass plaque stands on the site of Market Square Arena in Indianapolis. The arena was demolished on July 8th 2001 and its site is currently being used as a car park. The memorial contains a time capsule holding a scarf, Elvis’ last tour schedule and various other items. It is to be opened in 100 years. An error in measuring the space available meant that the capsule could not be lodged in the monument last night. Instead, it had to be sent to a welder to be reduced in size before it could be fitted this morning. Taking part in the dedication was Al Dvorin who was Elvis’ stage announcer for many years. Prior to giving a brief speech, he offered up his trademark announcement given at the end of any concert, “Elvis has left the building”.

In Custody

2001. Howie Epstein, bassist with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and his girlfriend, country singer Carlene Carter are arrested in Albuquerque, New Mexico by State Police. The cops pull the couple over for speeding on Interstate 25 but that’s just the start of their problems.

A check shows that the vehicle, a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee was reported stolen from a dealership on March 15 and whilst searching it, 2.9 grams of black tar heroin and “a large amount of drug paraphernalia” is found. Carter told arresting officers that the drugs and related items were hers and “for personal use”. The couple were booked into Bernalillo County Detention Center on felony charges but released the next day after posting a bail bond.

In Hospital

2002. Billy Joel checks out of a substance abuse clinic and psychiatric hospital in Connecticut after 10 days treatment for reported alcohol abuse. People magazine reported that Joel entered the clinic as his Father’s Day gift to his 16-year-old daughter, Alexa.
