1963. Beki Bondage (Vice Squad) born Rebecca Louise Bond in Bristol, England.
1973. Wings cancel their show scheduled for today at Birmingham’s Hippodrome because of safety fears. A 15 ton water tank has been built into the stage for a summer revue and the band’s technical staff are not happy about the proximity of their electrical cabling. The gig will be rescheduled for another venue in the city.
1969. Mike Hugg (Manfred Mann) appears in Marylebone magistrate’s Court, London on charges of driving in St. John’s Wood with excess alcohol in his blood. He admits the offence and is fined £ 20, ordered to pay 14 guineas (£ 14 14/-) costs and banned from driving for one year.
Despite his problems in court, Hugg is lucky. Today Manfred Mann announces he has disbanded the group of the same name and will be forming a new one to be called Manfred Mann Chapter Three with Mike Hugg.
1964. Ringo Starr is taken ill during a photo shoot in Barnes, West London. He is taken to hospital where he will stay for the next week. With the band ready to leave to start their world tour tomorrow, Brian Epstein instructs George Martin to phone Jimmy Nichol and offer him the job as Ringo’s temporary replacement. Jimmy accepts and joins the three fabs at EMI’s Abbey Road Sudios to rehearse.
1997. Later… With Jools Holland (BBC-2, U.K.) 9.5. Primal Scream – “Burning Wheel”, “Star”, “If They Move, Kill ‘Em”; Suzanne Vega – “Borthday”, “Tom’s Diner”, “Headshots”; Placebo – “Nancy Boy”, “Teenage Angst”; Del Amitri – “Not Where It’s At”, “Some Other Sucker’s Parade”; Jhelisa – “Freedom From Pity”; Chris Smithers – “Help Me Now”. Here are Primal Scream with “Burning Wheel”.
1971. Mississippi Fred McDowell dies in Memphis, Tennessee aged 68.
