From the Rockmine Almanac for today (Tuesday 1st April):
1946. Ronnie Lane (The Faces) born in Plaistow, London, England.
2000. Ted Nugent sparks a storm of criticism and a national boycott of his shows by The League Of United Latin American Citizens. During his set, opening for Kiss in Houston, Texas, tonight he launched a stream of invective at Hispanics, urging those that can’t speak English to get out of America.
1969. The Beach Boys sue Capitol Records for $ 2,000,000 in unpaid royalties.
1970. John Lennon and Yoko Ono issue a press release stating that they’ve been admitted to a London clinic for a dual sex change operation. Well, it is April Fool’s Day, after all. Despite pulling this practical joke, the pair have actually started a four week course of primal scream therapy with Dr. Arthur Janov at his London hospital.
1976. John Lennon‘s father, Freddie, dies of stomach cancer at Brighton General Hospital. While John had always resented his father abandoning him as a child, the two men were reconciled on Freddie’s deathbed. Unable to leave America because of his immigration battle, John had ‘phoned the hospital to speak to his father for several hours.
1962. The Ed Sullivan Show (CBS, U.S.A.) 701. Jackie Wilson – “Heart”; Patti Page – “Most People Get Married” & “All The Way”.
1984. Marvin Gaye is shot dead by his father after an argument at his parents’ home in Los Angeles where he had been living. Here’s the death certificate.
