Now Playing

Christian Fennesz, Ryuichi Sakamoto – “Cendre” (2007)

An ambient classic. Sakamoto’s brooding, beautifully leaden piano woven through a huge complexity of electronic sounds. Fennesz builds a deep thick piled carpet of sound with an underlay of white and pink noise, carefully adding sounds so disparate they should never fit together. Strangely, nothing jars.

Some ambient music is nothing more than wallpaper, you listen without hearing. This is far from that. It draws you in to it, constantly revealing something previously unheard. It’s exceptionally difficult to concentrate on anything else. This music demands you pay attention to it.
