1948. “Sandy” Denny (Fairport Convention; Fotheringay) born Alexandra Elene Maclean Denny in Wimbledon, London.
On Tour
1977. The Sex Pistols are playing Rotterdam Art Centre but back in London, EMI Records chairman Sir John Read decides that press coverage of the band’s behaviour at Heathrow Airport is the last straw. As of today, the band’s contract is terminated. Pressing plants are instructed to cease production of “Anarchy In The UK” and the single is deleted from catalogue.
In Court
1998. Paula Cole’s tour manager, Phillip Sullivan appears in a Kentucky court charged with attempted rape, assault and burglary. He pleads not-guilty to the charges and is released on $ 10,000 bail. Sullivan had been arrested at Boston’s Logan International Airport on December 24th following an incident in Kentucky on December 17th. His lawyers say it’s a case of mistaken identity and believe they have a “rock solid alibi” as he was on tour at the time.
In Hospital
1997. Frank Sinatra is rushed to the Cedars of Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles suffering from an irregular heartbeat. Barbara Sinatra, the star’s fourth wife is at his bedside and children Frank Jnr., Nancy and Tina are on their way. The 81 year old singer spent ten days in hospital at the end of last year after suffering from a heart attack and pneumonia.

Death
1987. Folk singer Alex Campbell dies in hospital in Tonder, Denmark, aged 63. He had suffered from throat cancer since 1983.

1967. The Bee Gees announce they are cancelling nightclub bookings in Germany this weekend. Two Australian members of the group have been ordered to leave Britain by the middle of September. If they were to leave the country before then it seems certain they would be barred from re-entering. Until the matter is settled, the group will not undertake any overseas concerts.
All At Sea
1965. An air-sea search is launched after a crewman goes missing overboard from a yacht chartered by Frank Sinatra. The singer is cruising the waters off New England with actresses Rosalind Russell and Claudette Colbert, their husbands and other guests. Among them is Mia Farrow, the 19 year old actress whose name has been romantically linked with Sinatra. The missing man, 23 year old Robert Goldfarb, is thought to have been lost when the boat’s dingy overturned.

1964. Mick Jagger is fined £ 32, and given two endorsements to his license, at Liverpool Magistrate’s Court for driving without insurance, being unable to produce a valid drivers’ license and driving at 48-50 m.p.h. in a 30 m.p.h. limit.

Death
2002. Guitarist Michael Houser (Widespread Panic) dies at his home in Athens, Georgia as a result of complications related to his pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his wife, Barbette and son, Walker. Houser (40) last played with the band on July 2nd. Since leaving due to his worsening condition, guitar duties have been taken on by George McConnell a longtime friend of Michael and the rest of the group. With the announcement of his death comes news that his family are setting up the Michael Hauser Music Fund “as a living memorial to Michael and his love of music”.
Babble
I’m back in Elgin today and heading to Nairn soon. The plan to stage a memorabilia exhibition seems to have run into problems. With entrance to the cafe area being open to ticket holders only, public access is the main concern. Needless to say with strict fire safety laws, the number of people allowed in the venue at any time must be strictly adhered to.
With that in mind, I’m hoping either to find a compromise solution or see if one of the vacant shops near the Ballerina Ballroom can be used to house the show as a “fringe” event. I will, of course, keep you updated.

1996. Michael Jackson flies into Brunei where he is being paid $ 15 – $ 20 million for performing three shows. One show will be for the Sultan who celebrates his 50th birthday and another will be at the opening of a theme park built by the Sultan for his people.
In The Press
1940. Billboard magazine publsihes the very first singles chart. Until this date, the magazine had publisherd individual listings of sales for each record label. This chart combined all labels for the first time. Topping the chart was “I’ll Never Smile Again” by the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra with Frank Sinatra and The Pied Pipers.
In Hospital
1999. Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood leaves St. Thomas’s Hospital in London with a police guard. He had been shot by a Yardie gunman on a motorcycle as he drove home from a music festival on July 18th. Throughout his stay in hospital, Westwood was guarded by armed police officers.

Death
1977. Gary Kellgren co-owner of The Record Plant recording studios in Los Angeles and Sausalito drowns in a Hollywood swimming pool.

1946. Tim Lynch (The Flamin’ Groovies) born in San Francisco, California.
On Tour
1972. The Rolling Stones arrive in Boston but after a scuffle at the airport, Mick Jagger, Marshall Chess and film-maker Robert Frank are charged with obstructing police officers and Keith Richards is charged with assaulting a photographer and a journalist. With the band playing Boston’s Garden Theater tonight, the city’s mayor, Kevin White, bails them out of jail. The band hits the stage two hours late but no-one seems to care. The mayor is given a standing ovation by the audience.
In Politics
1972. Frank Sinatra appears before the U.S. House Crime Select Committee in Washington, D.C. and accuses it of irresponsibly letting a convicted felon “bandy his name about”. He told the packed hearing that it was “character assassination” and said they should have immediately refuted claims, made during the testimony of Joseph “The Baron” Barboza, that the singer was a front-man for the Mafia in the Fontainbleau and Sands hotels in Miami and Las Vegas. Joseph Phillips, counsel for the committee, said that Barboza made the allegations when he was being asked about unrelated matters, without any prompting.
In Court
1966. William Oliver Smedley, 54, an accountant and former vice-president of the Liberal Party, appears in court at Saffron Walden, Essex, charged with the murder of Reginald Calvert, 37, head of the Radio City pop radio station. Smedley is reported to have sparked the incident on the night of 19th June, when he and a boarding party visited the old wartime fort at Shivering Sands, where the radio station is based. They immobilized the transmitter and left some men to guard it. It’s thought the action was taken to stop the sale of the radio station to an American company. As a result, Calvert had visited Smedley at home on June 21st. Smedley said he feared for his life and admitted to police that he shot Calvert. Mr. Peter Palmes, prosecuting, said that the only weapon Calvert carried was a small tear gas pen. The hearing continues tomorrow.

Death
1966. Bobby Fuller’s body is found in his parked car in Los Angeles. He had been badly beaten and had been forced to swallow gasoline which killed him. Strangely, the police put the 22 year old’s death down to suicide and a coroner’s report, which ignored the bruising, agreed. It was only later after an investigation that details of the true circumstances were revealed. Rumours circulating at the time suggested that he’d been having an affair with the wife of a mafia gangster.
